Winter Tour to Finnish Lapland

The seven exciting days exploring Finnish Lapland are truly beyond description. There are a landscape of wintry-wilderness, the natural splendor of enchanted night skies called Northern Lights, tranquil ice-castles in Rovaniemi, exhilarating snowmobile adventures, unforgettable Icebreaker Sampo cruise and invigorating sled-rides pulled by fury huskies dashing through the snow. A cruise across the icy seas and even a chance encounter with Santa Claus awaits you.

Day 1: Welcome to Helsinki

Spend your first night of your Finnish Lapland tour at the Holiday Inn City Center Hotel.  This 4* hotel is conveniently located in the heart of Helsinki. The city boasts an efficient public transport system and it makes for easy exploration. Why not take in the local architecture with a short walk or sample traditional Finnish cuisine bursting with classic old-world flavors. It’s up to you.

Day 2: Discover Helsinki – Bus Sightseeing Tour

After a good night’s sleep you will enjoy a hearty Scandinavian  breakfast. It’s time to enjoy a panoramic two-hour bus sightseeing tour of Helsinki taking in the many local attractions. The bus passes through Senate Square. You will see comprising famous buildings and landmarks. This area is the oldest part of central Helsinki. Some buildings are dating back to 1757. There are the Helsinki Cathedral, Government Palace, University of Helsinki, and Sederholm.

Also included is Finland Hall. It is an architectural masterpiece by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. That is well worth a visit! The dynamic, multi-purpose venue is renowned for concerts and important events.

Visit Parliament Building. Learn about Finnish Parliament and the European Union as you experience 1920s Classicism architecture, complete with 14 Corinthian columns! Amazing!
You will see that Uspenski Cathedral. It is not only the largest Orthodox Church in Western Europe, but that the cathedral is truly gigantic with a central dome and four monolithic granite pillars. An equally impressive interior awaits with magnificent chandeliers, vaulted ceilings, and vibrant displays of Orthodox decorations and icons of miraculous workings.

Sibelius Monument is another of Helsinki’s most well-known tourist attractions and famous statues. View the incredible Rock Church that is excavated directly into the solid rock. Must be seen to be believed is a good description! The rest of the day is yours to explore the local sites further, enjoy a sauna, or do whatever.

Your holidays in Lapland winter tour also includes an  overnight rail trip, with the modern, comfortable train leaving Helsinki late in the evening and arriving at Rovaniemi just before lunch.

Day 3: Reindeer & Snowmobile Lapland Winter Adventures

After arriving in Rovaniemi, transfer at the  Scandic Rovaniemi Hotel 4*.  The day is brimming with Finnish Lapland winter adventures as you travel by car to a reindeer farm. Enjoy a relaxed reindeer sleigh ride as well as the thrill of snowmobiles.  You will have warm beverages by the campfire to finish your spectacular day, a taste of Lapland tourism at its best.

Day 4: Explore Rovaniemi & Outdoor Activities

A delicious  breakfast followed by a ‘plan your own day,’ booking one of more of the exciting ‘outdoor activities’ listed on our website. Rest assured there are plenty of interesting and fun places to visit in Rovaniemi—this metropolitan city is the perfect base to experience all of Finnish Lapland’s winter wonderland magic.

Day 5: Kemi – The Gulf of Bothnia

After a tasty  breakfast, it’s time to head south to Kemi, the Gulf of Bothnia via a two-hour bus trip. After check-in at the Cumulus Hotel, enjoy your day discovering this lovely industrial town. You can visit an array of shops, restaurants and bars. Enjoy comfortable, clean accommodation including three saunas and an indoor pool on-site.  Also you can like a friendly game of darts and a few jukebox tunes in the casual Mexican-saloon-style bar! Of course, Lapland visitors love Kemi for two main wintry reasons — the Lumilinna Snow Castle & Hotel and to cruise on the Sampo Icebreaker; which you will get to experience firsthand tomorrow!

Day 6: Icebreaker Sampo & Snow Castle Visits

The day starts with another impressive buffet style  breakfast followed by a transfer to Icebreaker Sampo. It is  an unforgettable sea safari cruise through the icy seas and glaciers in the Gulf of Bothnia.  A tour of the ship and a dip in the freezing waters for those people brave enough follows (wetsuits provided), as well as an afternoon visit to the Snow Castle.  It is gigantic pure white walls, artworks of ice and snow, Snow Restaurant, Snow Chapel and Snow Hotel. It is a true Arctic adventure!
Transfer to the railway station in the evening for a delightful  overnight journey back to Helsinki.
